The 4 Personality Styles
In our studies we have found that people have four
basic personality (or behavioral) styles – Drivers, Promoters,
Supporters and Analyzers. When blended together in varying
percentages, these four personality styles make us who we are.
Each job (or career) has its own ‘behavioral profile’ and the
closer the behavioral match between the job seeker and the job requirements, the
happier, more productive and successful that person will be in their chosen
career.
Here are the basic characteristics of each personality style,
and the career pathways that best match that style.
Drivers
Drivers are strong willed, practical and decisive.
Action oriented and results focused, they prefer jobs that are task rather than
relationship oriented. They are assertive and like to tell others what to do.
Drivers are the entrepreneurs and are most comfortable when they are in control.
They are competitive and thrive under pressure. Often confrontational, they
exude energy, move faster, speak louder and decide quicker. Drivers are less
interested in small talk and don’t communicate their feelings too often or too
freely. They are great tacticians and may also have great creativity in arts
where they can express their freedom and individuality.
The ideal career for Drivers is where they can make
decisions, set goals and measure results; matching jobs are: Business
managers, designers, self employed, legal, military, consultants, pilots, radio
or TV announcers, sales, musicians, building & construction, directors, chefs
and entrepreneurs.
Promoters
Promoters are enthusiastic and inspirational, and have a
gift of working with people. They use their charm and persuasion to achieve
their goals. They enjoy projects involving others, particularly where the
environment is non aggressive and the requirement is to motivate others. They
are very approachable, warm, competitive and fast paced. Terrific in teams and
group activities, they often want to be the leader, because they have excellent
leadership skills. When given the choice, they prefer to work with other people
rather than alone.
The ideal career for Promoters involves people; matching
jobs are: advertising, hospitality, HR, recruitment, public relations,
coaches, sales & marketing, acting, recruitment, media, journalists, retail,
designers, beauticians, receptionists, travel and teaching.
Supporters
Supporters are at ease with people, fitting comfortably
into most situations. They are law abiding and tend to be more factual than
intuitive. They’re great at organizing and have a talent for logistics.
Supporters love their family and friends and stay in contact with them
frequently. They do not believe in instant success but that you have to work in
order to achieve. Whilst they don’t see themselves as set in their ways they
dislike sudden changes. They are easy going, friendly people who get on well
with and are liked by most people.
The ideal careers for Supporters are those that involve
people, service and information; matching jobs are: health and welfare,
medical, police, customs, dentists, lecturers, personal assistants,
telemarketing, therapists, artists, child care, clergy, counselors, office
managers and project engineers.
Analysers
Analysers are perfectionists who look to systems, rules and
order within a structured environment. They are accurate, precise, reserved,
detailed, and logical and follow rules and standards. They are creative and good
at problem solving. Often they like to work alone rather than in a group, and
they generally prefer a closed door environment. Despite their solitary nature
they are loyal and very supportive. It is important to Analysers to know exactly
what is required of them and what their responsibilities are. They want to get
it right the first time and hate having to do things over again.
The ideal careers for Analysers are those involving
details, facts and information and less to do with people; matching jobs are:
IT, accounting, architecture, design, research, electrical, engineering,
theology, planning, medical & dental, finance, builders, trades people,
administrators, scholars, scientists, and agriculture.
